Starting a Seed Bank for a Grid Down Situation
(18) Variety Pack Survival Gear Food Seeds
Grid Down:
In a total grid down situation you will have to grow your own food.
-because hunting resources will be dramatically reduced due to over hunting and poaching.
In a grid down situation, people will not adhere to hunting regulations and rules. Trespassing will be a major problem during this time. You will have a hard time learning by trial and error after a disaster hits.
Seed Problems:
-Seeds not stored properly-mold.
-Soil could become contaminated due to natural or chemical disaster’s.
-No water due to drought or too much water due to flooding.
-No sunlight, if volcanic eruptions or chemicals are sprayed in the air your plants may not grow do to not enough sun light.
-Beware of both animals and humans. Especially at night.
-Land overuse, or over fertilized. If this happens let the land lay and God will take care of it.
-Insects, animals, weather all can play havoc on your crops.
-Fungus and root rot may also be a problem.
-Lack of seed knowledge. Ex. If you plant corn one year the next you would want to plant something like peas or green beans. The corn pulls the nitrogen out of the soil, while the green beans and peas put the nitrogen back.
BUILD YOUR OWN SEED BANK:
-DO NOT BUY GMO SEEDS:
GMO seeds are not made to reproduce and if they due the product yield is more than likely half or less of what you produced the year before. Do keep in mind that GMO seeds are not the same as hybrid seeds. The normal consumer cannot buy GMO based seeds.
-Either purchase a large lot of non-gmo seeds weather online or at your local nursery store
-If you have seeds from past fruit and vegetables you are off to a good start.
-All seeds will lose their germination over time. Although:
Scientist were able to regrow 2000 yr old Date Palm seeds found in an Israeli desert.
-Buy what you and your family will eat.
You can always barter or trade what you don’t like. Seeds can have monetary value.
-It would be wise to remember to always let at least grow one-two plants for production of seeds only.
-You must understand that most food in our grocery stores are mostly GMO. Some are labeled as organic, but the FDA does not regulate it.
Learn To Grow
-I have often heard, “I don’t have a green thumb” “I kill everything I try growing”
-Ask for help! Find a community garden. Look for garden groups in your area. Check to see if there is a local 4-h club. Advertise online for help. This maybe a project for a young Eagle Scout or 4-H club member.
-I have also heard “I don’t have any land, I live in the city.” That might be true, but you can grow herbs on the porch if available or windowsill.
-Purchase a small greenhouse to maximize your limited space.
-Ask friends and family that have land and give them a portion of what is produced. (Share cropping)
-If soil is the issue, then try doing raised bed gardening or square foot gardening if you have decent soil. Also look into hay bail gardening.
-If you have an empty room in a house or basement, you can purchase grow lights and have certain vegetables year round.
-Learn what climate zone you are in.
-Study about companion growing.
-Know the difference between annual and perineal crops. Also learn the difference between crop seeds and heirloom seeds.
3 Things That You Will Need to Know
1.) Recognizable Crops-a garden with what you may see in the grocery stores. Also know your climate zone and local area.
2.) Grow foods most people wouldn’t recognize as easily. Foods that grow under ground. Ex. Carrots, onions, potatoes; garlic, radish; asparagus; etc.
3.) Wild plants that are native to your area. Have someone teach you how to forage in your local surroundings.
Something’s to Consider
Prepper’s might not consider having multiple-extra gardening tools. Yes you may have one or two shovels, pitch forks, or garden hoes in your garage or tool shed. What happens when you have to leave your house and have move to your bug out facility. Only to realize when its to late that your tools are at your house.
Another thing to consider is having a stock pile of Wild Flower Seeds. These will help your garden with cross pollination. As well as giving you nice scenery during troubling times. If you are able to get your hand on some Bee Boxes, this will help boost your garden production. As well as giving you another source of food and income. Not to forget the health benefits, you and your family will receive.
One thing most people don’t think about when bugging out is to purchase Wild Game Food Plot Seeds. This will help to deter wildlife. Not to mention attracting large and small game for food. This approach will help keep your family feed, when times are tough.
